Imperfections,

Revised and Remade

March 2012

Being engulfed in portraits of women, and the idealized female body in today's society and public eye, I decided to produce a series commenting on how oftentimes women are portrayed as perfect beings. Men would paint or depict women as a fetishistic object and ignore flaws making the woman seem perfect. In olden times classical painters would depict women as an idealized figure, smoothing over their bodies ignoring blemishes with their painterly strokes. However, I am a woman in the modern era. I see the flaws in the women and I want to exaggerate them because a woman is still beautiful even if she contains a "double chin" or "acne" or even "large eyebrows". A woman portraying a woman has a very different approach than a man depicting a woman.

I wanted to create a piece in which one considers the differences we take for granted. I went around St. Lawrence University and found every bathroom that had the toilet paper dispencer on the right side and a door that was hinged on the right.  I found that the gridding of these images drew more attention to the variances of toilets, colors, lighting, tiles, style of toilet paper dispencer, and overall atmospher. When arranged together is amazing to see how many different bathrooms you use and how unique each is.

German fairytales are darker than most fairytales we have learned to love today. The Grimm brothers created evil, gorey tales of princes, witches, and other creatures. This Tableau depicts the ending to one of the stories: Schneewittchen (English translation: Snow White.)
